OK …. OK ….I’m stretching thinks a bit here ( well ….. quite a lot really ) , but once again , I am going to have a short chat about possums . Look , I like possums , but I am not too sure why they sometimes make a passing reference in my blogs . Guy Pearce loves possums , well I mean he hasn’t told me personally , that he dislikes them . He made an amusing speech on the acceptance of his Emmy , at the awards ceremony the other day , so that is why I have picked on him .
By the way , have you ever seen a possum released from a sugar bag ? I have , and crikey it was impressive . I know that possums can run pretty quick , but boy oh boy , did that little sucker run . As it dropped out of the sack , it’s little feet were already doing 100 miles per hour . It hit the ground running , and didn’t stop until it was 30 feet up a gum tree . I’m glad I wasn’t in the road of travel , as it would have gone straight over the top of me , leaving multiple lacerations .
They have a problem at the Treasury Gardens in Melbourne with possums gaining access to the very old trees . To fix the problem , they have fitted metal collars to the trees . This makes it impossible for the possum to scale the tree . The only way they could climb the tree , would be if it jumped across from an adjacent tree . They have thought of that as well , by fitting collars to all trees in a grouping .
So if Guy wants to come home to Oz and play with a possum in the Melbourne Treasury Gardens , he may find the place a possum free zone .

John,
After reading your blog, I am ready to buy a ticket, get on a plane and go to Melbourne.

Your possums down in Australia look a lot more capable than our Possums here in America. Sounds like an entertaining problem!

John,
I’m sure the possums appreciate the metal collars going on the trees rather than, well, you know…

Hi John,
Possums around here have to be caught and released in humane traps. Of course, domestic cats get caught in those traps periodically. Naturally, we let the kitties out.

I think I am going to enjoy getting an education about Australia. Your possum picture reminds me of the raccoons we have here in Canada. Except for the ears.
I’m with Dennis. I saw that picture and thought, that doesn’t look like the possums I see around here! Regardless your posts are always fun and entertaining and I love to see your thoughts flow in print.

I’m going to have to agree with Sonya on this one … regarding Guy Pearce and Possums. But even when I don’t know how the topic relates, I always find your articles amusing and entertaining … I guess you’re an Awesome Possum

Your possums sure look different from the ones I am familiar with in the midwest US.
I have never seen a possum that was just released from a sugar bag but I suspect that if that had been me being released from a bag, I would have hit the ground running too.

I think possums are the cutest animals. I’ve lived all over California and have had possum friends in each part. I had a little one, a baby, who visited my home in Huntington Beach each night for about a month or so. I missed that little guy when he finally moved on!

We were camping on our honeymoon… just 25 years ago… only seems like yesterday…anyway…it was dark and I heard something in our food outside. As any wise woman would do I turned to my protector… my husband – who didn’t know what it was either… till he braved the man’s food eating sounds and found a possum! Love Possums!
Loved your story!
John, your blog is always entertaining, and as Rachel said, always strangely related to or on topic of something.
Never thought I would see armored trees before either….
Always looking forward to more

John your posts crack me up! Hilarious and always somehow relevant

We always called the Opossums. I always thought that was their name or they were from Ireland.
Guy Pearce is a really good actor. Thought he was outstanding in MEMENTO! Instead of giving that movie 5 out of 5 stars, I’ll now give it a 5 possum rating

John, I had no idea that possum’s climbed trees. For some reason I thought they lived in cardboard boxes in the back of abandoned garages!
